Support for Nonverbal Learning Delays

When verbal skills are strong, but everything else is a struggle

Some children speak clearly, use big words, and seem advanced, at least on the surface. But when it comes to schoolwork, organization, problem-solving, social cues, or following directions, they fall apart. You’re not imagining it.This is the confusing, and often overlooked, reality of nonverbal learning delay (NVLD).

At Resolve Unlimited, we work with children who “sound fine” but can’t keep up, can’t follow through, or can’t connect. We help you understand what’s really going on and what to do about it.

What Is Nonverbal Learning Delay?

NVLD isn’t about being nonverbal. In fact, verbal abilities are often a strength.

The difficulties lie in:

  • Visual-spatial processing (reading charts, writing on a line, organizing space)
  • Executive functioning (planning, prioritizing, completing tasks)
  • Social perception (reading facial expressions, tone, or body language)
  • Motor coordination (handwriting, tying shoes, gym class)
  • Math reasoning and problem-solving

These gaps aren’t rooted in effort. They’re rooted in the brain’s ability to process and organize nonverbal input. And that’s where our work begins.

A Multi-Sensory, Brain-Based Approach

We don’t treat symptoms in isolation. We strengthen the underlying cognitive systems responsible for processing information and functioning independently.

Your child’s verbal skills are a gift and we use them to support the areas that lag behind.

Fast ForWord

Trains the brain to sequence, focus, and retain

While originally designed for language processing delays, Fast ForWord is incredibly effective for non-language-based learning delays because it builds:

  • Working memory (remembering and using instructions)
  • Sustained attention (staying on task without drifting)
  • Processing speed (making sense of information quickly enough to use it)
  • Sequencing and logic (critical for math, reading comprehension, and organization)

We select specific Fast ForWord programs that target executive function, learning stamina, and complex reasoning, without overloading your child.

The Listening Program (TLP)

Improves regulation and attention through sound

Children with NVLD often experience sensory dysregulation, poor body awareness, or high anxiety in group or novel settings.

TLP uses gentle, neuro-acoustic music and bone conduction to:

  • Calm and organize the nervous system
  • Improve balance, timing, and spatial awareness
  • Build capacity for focused, relaxed attention

We often recommend TLP as a foundation to prepare the brain for cognitive work, and to ease transitions and overwhelm.

TalkTools (selectively used)

Supports visual-motor integration and oral coordination

For some children with NVLD, handwriting, oral motor coordination, or sensory integration issues are present, even if speech is not impaired.

We use targeted TalkTools strategies to:

  • Improve oral sensory awareness for feeding or focus
  • Strengthen core stability that affects posture and endurance
  • Build motor planning skills for smoother, more confident expression

This layer is used only if relevant. We never overload families with tools that don’t apply.

How It Works

We begin with a conversation. No diagnostic label is required.

We may be able to help if you describe your child as:

  • Verbally bright but socially or academically behind
  • Smart but unable to complete tasks
  • Highly anxious, avoidant, or prone to meltdowns when overwhelmed
  • Misunderstood or overlooked in school because of their strong language skills

Programs are home-based and tailored to your child. Most clients work 30-60 minutes a day, 4 to 5 days a week. You receive regular support, tracking, and simple guidance, no extra appointments or overwhelm.

You’re not imagining it. And you’re not alone.

Just because your child can talk doesn’t mean they’re thriving. Let’s look beneath the surface and rebuild the systems that support confident, connected, capable learning.
